Choco-vanilla fudge for your skin

If you are a fan of chocolate sauce with vanilla ice-cream, then a vanilla cream massage is just perfect for you.

A mix of vanilla with cocoa powder will not only soothe your senses but tantalise your taste buds too. Experience the rejuvenating magic of vanilla cream massage at Aura spa, in the capital.

A dimly-lit massage room with soothing music in the background, sea-shells on the wall and fresh flowers floating in water, giving positive energy, welcomes one to a relaxing session.

It starts with a dry massage, followed by full body massage with the paste of cocoa powder, vanilla, coconut cream and coconut granules.

The paste promotes blood circulation, has healing properties and repairs tissues, with the massage therapist massaging the body with equal pressure, focusing on the acupressure points and applying long soothing strokes in a rhythmic manner. One cannot ask for more.

At the same time, the aroma of vanilla and chocolate lingers in the air, giving ample scope for one to think of chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream!

A quick hot bath after the session leaves the skin soft and supple and you leave the place with a fresh mind and relaxed body.

Pedicure at home in 5 easy steps

You will need: Nail clippers, cotton pads, nail polish remover, cuticle cream, a nail file, a loofah, a good foot scrub and moisturiser

Step 1:

First, you need to trim and shape your nails. Remove your old nail polish with the nail polish remover and trim your nails neatly. Make sure you cut straight across and don't cut the corners too much, as this can lead to painful ingrown nails. Use a nail file to give them the desired shape.

Step 2:

Give your feet a nice foot bath. In a basin or tub, fill warm water enough to cover up to your ankles and add some bath salts. You can also add a few drops of any essential oil of your choice. Also add a few smooth pebbles to the water. These will provide a gentle massage as you place your feet on them. Soak your feet and relax for 15-20 minutes. Dry them with a towel.

Step 3:

The next step is exfoliating. Once you are done with the foot bath, dry you feet and rub some cuticle cream on the base of each toe nail. Leave it for a few minutes. In the meanwhile, using a foot scrub and remove all the dry and dead skin cells. Be firm but do not scrape too hard. Next, wipe off the cuticle cream and push back the cuticles gently with a cuticle pusher.

Step 4:

Once you are done scrubbing, wash your feet clean and moisturise them. Moisturising helps soften, hydrate the skin and protects it from cracking. Rub a generous portion on your feet and massage well. Regular foot massages also help keep nerve endings stimulated, improve blood circulation and nourish the skin and foot muscles!

Step 5:

Now your nails are ready to get decorated. Paint them with a colour of your choice. Always apply a base coat. Wait for it to dry and then apply a coat of nail polish. Let it dry completely before you apply the next coat. This will make your nail polish last longer. You can also jazz your feet up with a pretty anklet or toe rings!

Love your skin, keep it glowing

Love your skin, keep it glowing. Here are some surprising tricks to keep it healthy and glowing all year
From acne to eczema, there's plenty that can go wrong. We round up the latest research on new ways to keep it positively glowing...
beautiful skin glowing

Cut out white bread for fewer spots
Although doctors have said diet has no bearing on acne, a recent Australian study showed that a low GI diet did help decrease spots. This means swapping white refined carbs such as bread, cereal and pasta for wholemeal varieties.

Sleep on your back to beat wrinkles
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, sleeping in the same position night after night can lead to wrinkles that don't disappear once you're up. They also note that sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on the cheeks and chin, while sleeping face down gives you a furrowed brow. Your best bet for smoother skin is to sleep face up, on your back.

Eczema-proof your place of work
Hand dermatitis or eczema is the second most common reason for people taking time off work in the UK. Any role that involves using chemicals or getting hands repeatedly wet can be a trigger, with hairdressing, catering, cleaning and nursing the worst culprits. So it's vital to always wear protective gloves, especially if you suffered from eczema as a child, as it can often recur in adulthood.

Don't waste money on super-high SPFs
You might think sunblock SPF 100 would be twice as good as SPF 50, but there's hardly any difference. SPF 50 blocks 98% of UV rays while SPF 100 blocks 99% — a tiny difference in protection for the huge price difference. As most of us use only half the amount of sun-cream we need, you're better off doubling the amount of sunblock than doubling the SPF.

Sip some red wine
Grapes contain one of the most powerful anti-ageing antioxidants yet discovered — resveratrol. Studies suggest it can help maintain a youthful complexion by fighting damaging free radicals. But don't overdo it. A small glass of red wine every other day will boost your intake. Or try grape juice as an alternative.

Try giving your face a good rub
Not only does it feel great, a facial massage can help stimulate fibroblasts (connective cells) in the skin to release collagen and restore some of the elasticity that's lost as we age. But don't pay someone to do it. Just five minutes a night massaging in your favourite moisturiser, using sweeping movements, will have just the same effect.

Tuck into turkey
This often-forgotten low-fat meat contains a vital skin-friendly protein called carnosine that slows down a process in the skin called cross-linking.

When this happens, fibres grow in the skin's collagen, making it stiff and less elastic. This stops it snapping back when you do things like smile or frown — and is what causes laughter lines and crow's feet. Use turkey in place of chicken in stir-fries and salads.

Get your oats
Oats are one of the few natural ingredients approved by the stringent Food and Drug Administration in America for their beneficial effects on skin problems. They contain phytoalexins, which have a soothing and anti-irritant effect on the skin. Studies have shown that an oat-based skincare regime can bring about a significant improvement in people with mild to moderate eczema.

Speed up your cell turnover
While skin of all ages produces new cells which gradually move to the surface and shed, the older you get, the slower this process becomes. Dead cells stay on the surface for much longer, resulting in that dull, dehydrated look. "Gentle exfoliation with a damp flannel or using a skin cream that contains retinoids (check the label) can help boost cell turnover," says dermatologist Francesca Fusco.

Ditch trans fats
These man-made fats are damaging to your skin, according to Harley Street dermatologist Dr Ariel Haus. Listed on the label as 'hydrogenated vegetable oil', some supermarkets have banned trans fats from own-brand products but it's still possible to buy biscuits, cakes and other processed food that contain them.

And breathe...
One big scientific discovery is that your state of mind can affect your skin. Stress releases hormones that can make acne, eczema and other conditions worse. Try yoga, reading or any other relaxing activity you enjoy. Just taking a few minutes at the end of the day to sit and take deep breaths - counting to 10 on the 'in' breath and 10 on the 'out' — can make a difference.

Boost fish intake
Healthy skin is maintained by fat. In particular, getting more of the essential omega-3 fats found in salmon and other oily fish can help to keep skin supple and ease conditions like eczema. US dermatologist Dr Nicholas Perricone even credits omega-3s with reducing the skin inflammation that is responsible for sagging and wrinkles. One to two portions a week will boost your intake.

Shun the sun to beat spots
It may seem the sun dries up and improves your acne but it makes it worse in the long run. As your skin sheds the UV-damaged cells, they clog pores and can trigger more breakouts of acne.

Swap hands when you put on sunscreen
Studies show that right-handed people put more sunscreen on the left side of their body than their right and vice versa, which can mean important areas miss out on adequate sun protection. Try swapping hands during application to ensure more even coverage.

Be a shady lady
Repetitive facial movements like squinting can overwork the facial muscles, forming a groove beneath the skin's surface. This eventually becomes a wrinkle or permanent frown line. Wear glasses if you need them for computer work and sunglasses on bright days to stop you squinting.

Sip on cherry juice to sleep better

Research says tart cherry juice can aid the sleep cycle and increase shut-eye time

Forget the hot chocolate, chamomile tea and other 'relaxation' beverages. If you have had a problem sleeping, you might take heed of this...word has it that tart cherry juice is the new mantra for those seeking a better night's sleep!

What the study says:
A research conducted by Britain's Northumbria University, saw healthy adults who drank two servings of tart cherry juice concentrate or a non-cherry fruit drink for seven consecutive days, one serving each in the morning and at bedtime. Researchers tracked the participant's sleep habits and after drinking the cherry juice, they found significant improvements in sleep behaviour, most notably longer sleep time, less daytime napping and increased overall sleep efficiency. They attribute the sleep benefits to the melatonin content of the red super fruit - a powerful antioxidant critical for sleep-wake cycle regulation, according to a university statement. Each serving of the tart cherry juice concentrate was estimated to contain the equivalent of 90-100 tart cherries, providing a significant level of melatonin in the juice and ultimately in the bodies of the participants.

Benefits of Omega-3

Omega-3 and it's values underlined again

It's a known fact that Omega-3 is good for your skin and hair. Also known are its anti-ageing qualities. What many don't know is that it's a great anti-inflammatory and therefore helpful in arthritic conditions as well.

"Arthritis patients are often benefitted by intake of Omega-3 capsules as it is a good anti-inflammatory," says Dr Rajiv Bhatia, orthopaedic surgeon. "And despite being an allopeathic doc, I quite often prescribe them to my patients, especially those in prelimnary stages of arthritis or even patients with sports injuries like sprains and ligament tears.

Other benefits of Omega-3
Good mood booster: Omega-3 helps elevate mood and counter blues and depression to a certain extent. "It's proven that omega-3 enhances 'feel good' hormone release in brain. I prescribe it to my patients," says Dr Rajendra Barve, psychiatirst.

Immunity booster: Like Vitamin C, Omega-3 too has immunity boosters that fights diseases and helps keep them at bay.

Sources of Omega-3
- Cold water fish like Salmon, Haddock, Mackrel, Sardines, Cod, Trout, Tuna
- Olives
- Walnuts
- Seeds like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds

How to lose weight without dieting

10 Tips for guaranteed weight loss

Your diet for good skin

Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain tells you how to take care of your complexion.

diet, good skin, skinAs more and more nutritional facts come to light, it is being established over and over again that the state of internal health is reflected externally, on the skin, hair, nails and eyes. Unbalanced diets and wrong foods not only create deficiencies, but lead to a build-up of toxins and wastes in the body. This, in turn, hampers the efficient functioning of the various systems in our body, undermining the health.

The condition can be reflected externally on the skin, in the form of beauty problems, like acne, spots, dark under-eye circles, dehydrated skin, and so on. On the other hand, a healthy, balanced diet, supplies the body with the essential nutrients, promotes both good health and beauty. Smooth skin, lustrous hair, bright eyes, slim figures and vitality owe much more to our diets than we realise.

There is enough evidence to show that a deficiency of vitamins and minerals is an important factor in early wrinkling of the skin. Vitamin C, for instance, strengthens the immune system and delays early aging. It also helps to maintain healthy collagen, the supportive tissue of the skin. Vitamin B is important for the formation of healthy new skin cells. Similarly, Vitamin A and E play significant roles in maintaining the softness and smoothness of the skin texture.
Constipation and the improper elimination of wastes can lead to clogged pores and acne. If you have an oily skin that is prone to blackheads, spots and pimples, you should ensure that your diet contains enough fibre. Cut down your intake of sugar, starch and fried foods and increase your intake of raw foods, like fresh fruits, raw salads and sprouts. Stick to whole grains and drink enough water and fresh fruit juices. Take the juice of one lemon first thing in the morning to cleanse the system.

Reduce your intake of fats, sugar and red meats. Increase your intake of whole grains, eliminating refined cereals and flours. You can get all the natural sugar you need from fruits. Honey can also be used as a sweetener. A part of your daily diet must consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, eaten raw, with the skin, as far as possible. Yoghurt is also a wonderful beauty food, while skimmed milk and paneer can be included. Vegetables should be lightly cooked. Take enough green leafy vegetables, like spinach. Fruit and vegetable juices, freshly extracted are ideal. They not only ensure a supply of valuable nutrients, but are assimilated and absorbed by the body very easily.
They also help to cleanse and purify the system and prevent the accumulation of toxic residues. Fruit and vegetable juices are best taken freshly extracted, with the addition of water.

Orange juice makes you look more beautiful

benefits of orange juice
A daily glass of orange juice can help improve your skin, hair and nails, say a panel of health and beauty experts.

They attribute the benefits to the vitamin C, potassium and folic acid it contains. Vitamin C is essential in the production of collagen, along with super nutrient Lutein.

Its yellow pigment is linked to reducing sun-induced skin damage and is believed to improve elasticity of the skin.

A 200ml glass of orange typically contains 60mg vitamin C and equates to 100 per cent of an adult's recommended daily amount.

"The adage of 'you are what you eat' is not a new one but science has lagged behind in determining the effect nutrition has on our skin, hair and nails," the Mirror quoted nutritionist Amanda Ursell as saying.

"Beauty experts are starting to see the benefits of a glass of this nutrient packed product, realising it isn't just what you put on your body but what you put into it too," she added.

The research was undertaken with 200 beauty industry workers who are members of CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women).

Two thirds of beauty professionals (65 per cent) said they recommend clients to drink a glass a day as part of their current beauty routine.

Susan Mahy, board director at Cosmetic Executive Women UK, said: "The essential nutrients you need for healthy skin, hair and nails are most beneficial when ingested as part of your diet.

"Our panel of executive women in the cosmetic, fragrance and hairdressing industries concluded that they have a direct effect on the skin," Mahy added.

Tomato and oatmeal for bright skin

bright skin, smooth skin
There are a hundred products in the market that claim to make your skin lighter, brighter and shinier.

From soaps to creams to whitening facial kits everyone promises to make you look like the model on billboards. However, certain factors work to determine the colour of your skin. Understanding what is it that is making your skin looking sallow instead of crowding your dresser with skin-whitening products will help you.

In a country like India where every month seems like summer, tanning is inevitable. You just can't avoid the sun and if you were born with a wheatish complexion, then it's time you accept that about yourself. If your job involves a lot of travelling as against working in the cosy confines of an office, your skin is bound to take a beating. However with a little help from nature, you can get rid of that dull, lifeless skin. Read on:

-Do not throw away orange rinds after you are done eating the fruit. Dry the rind in the sun till it is devoid of all moisture and turns crisp. Grind it to make a fine powder. Add a little raw milk to the orange powder to make a paste. Apply this paste on your face and neck as often as possible.

-Add yoghurt and tomato juice to a teaspoon of oatmeal and apply it on your face. Oatmeal acts as an exfoliator without being harsh and tomato juice is an excellent astringent while the yoghurt leaves your skin moisturised.

-Mix a teaspoon of milk powder, one teaspoon lemon juice, half a teaspoon of honey and half a teaspoon of almond oil and apply this concoction to your face. Wash off with cold water after 10 to 15 mintues for baby soft skin.

Use a night cream for better skin

skin, night cream for better skin
Night creams work wonders on your skin while you sleep... read on to find out more.

Skin is the most important part of one's body. And it is the most essential part of one's beauty as well. If your skin looks fresh and radiant, there is little that you need to do after that. And in the rush to look younger and slow down the process of ageing, night creams have come as a blessing to women who want to keep themselves beautiful.

So how do these night creams work? And are they any good? Better than day creams? These are the normal questions that arise in a person's mind. But let me tell you, night creams are very good. They repair and moisturise your skin. These are called night creams because you apply them before you go to sleep and when you wake up, viola! You find your skin refreshing and the complexion soft and rosy. This is because the elements used in night creams remove all the dull and dead skin while you sleep. The night creams are thicker as compared to the ordinary moisturisers. Hence, they penetrate deep inside the skin and moisturise it. And the vitamins and snit-ageing components help your skin look younger, wrinkle-free.

Also, when you are sleeping, the deep-breathing helps your skin produce new cells, which also helps in looking younger. But remember; don't apply the night cream on your upper lids of your eyes before sleeping or else you will wake up with puffy lids. So use the night creams and wake up to find a soft and supple skin and feel refreshed.

Try the following easy tips at home and see how effective they are in reducing hair loss!

1. Hot oil treatments: Take any natural oil - olive, coconut, canola - and heat it up so that it is warm, but not too hot. Massage it gently into your scalp. Put on a shower cap and leave it on for an hour, then shampoo your hair.

2. Natural juices: You can rub your scalp with either garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice. Leave it on overnight and wash it thoroughly in the morning.

5. Practice meditation: Believe it or not, most of the times, the root cause for hair loss is stress and tension. Meditation can help in reducing that and restore hormonal balance.
